Congratulations DUFF members! You won the Golden Growler in 2008! Jason VanPee Won 1st place! Jim Kinsman 2nd place! and Dave Yardley Placed 6th! But that's not all. Everyone that served as judges at the March meeting picked the winners (even if we did have them in a different order) and everyone that has been involved in meeting, brewing, and tasting was no doubt an inspiration to these fine brewers in our group... but wait! (Group picture above left to right Jim, Clint, Dave, Lisa, Fritz, and Mel)
That's still not all!
Besides the Golden Growler competition there was a AHA/BJCP Competition held as well (American Homebrewers Association/Beer Judge Certification Program). There were seven categories:
- Light Ales & Lagers
- Pale Ales
- Mild Amber and Brown
- Wheat and Rye Beers
- Dark Beers
- Strong and Smoked beers
- Belgium and French Ales
Jim Walker took first place with his Irish Red Ale and third place with his Belgian Heavy., Jim Kinsman took 1st place with his Belgium Dubbel Ale. All together, this was a fantastic showing for our first entry into this competition and it shows the great potential and talent that we have within our ranks.
If all that isn't enough to get you pumped, one of DUFF clubs suggestions for next year's beer style for the Golden Growler competition was drawn; next year we will be brewing California Common or steam beer! So, if you have a cache of Norther Brewer hops hang on to them. They will be needed for brewing the club entries. If you know anyone that has Northern Brewer Hops Rhizomes get them and lets get them planted. There is still time for a small harvest this fall.
Here is a
report from Chanel 7 t.v. out of Wausau about the Event and here is a the
Bull Falls report on the Best of Show competition.
Wausau Bound
Fritz, Jim and I piled into my V.W. early Saturday morning and set out for Wausau. We tried to stop for breakfast at the Pioneer in Westfield I think but the place was packed, so we ended up at a McDonald's in Plover while we waited for Point Brew Supply to open.
We met Tina at Point Brew Supply, bought a few bags of corks, wine kit, and other odds and ends and then we're back on the road to Wausau. We arrived around noon, met up with Dave, Clint and Lisa and relaxed at the bar in the Hereford and Hops waiting for the results of the competition.
Judging

With nearly 80 beers entered from four states, the judging took a great deal of time. Raffle tickets were sold and winners were drawn for a couple tables full of prizes while some of the judging was occurring. Spectators were invited to sit in on the final judging for the Best of the show and about 15 of us took the opportunity to watch as the four judges carried out their task.

Also, while the judges were busy rating homebrew, the rest of us were offered a tour of the brewing sections of the Hereford and Hops brew pub. From the grain room in the basement to the brewing room tanks, filters, heaters and coolers, Kevin Bowen the former brewmaster for the Hereford & Hops gave a very informative tour and answered many questions.
