DUFF meeting notes January 2011

January DUFF Meeting

The first DUFF quarterly meeting of the year was held on Friday, 7 January 2010, at the home of Mel and Sandy Smith. In addition to laying out a meeting schedule for the coming months, we discussed how the DUFF club can help homebrewers save money by offering beer brewing kits at reduced prices to our members.  The subject of membership dues was also brought up but no decision was made. Perhaps that will make a good discussion topic in the on-line DUFF Group forum or the DUFF Facebook Discussion?

Several members have started brewing Maibock beer. We will hold a club Maibock competition judging at the April meeting.

The DUFF club is going to begin encouraging brewing four beers a year, one for each quarter/season. We intend to offer style kits to interested club members. The winter/spring 2011 beer style chosen was Maibock but we did not get DUFF kits assembled in time for this beer, sorry! Future kits should save members substantial amounts of brewing dollars as the club purchases ingredients in bulk and we put kits together ourselves. Our first club kit will be offered in May at the Big Brew and judging will be held at the July 1st meeting.

The beer style for the spring season has not been decided yet, so join the on-line conversations if you have a suggestion. We are thinking along the lines of something light for summer, and an extract brew so that everyone is able to participate. If this idea works and there is interest, we'll consider doing all-grain kits in the future as well.

Meeting Schedule

February 4th– is an informal night out in Reedsburg at the Corner Pub, everyone pays for their own meal and drinks. No Homebrew. We haven't asked for permission and assume homebrew samples would not be allowed. We plan to gather at 6:00pm and enjoy Fish, Pete's microbrews, and chill out for the night for a DUFF meet-up!

March 4th–  Meeting in Hillsboro at Beezers Bar and Grill. The club will reserve the 'backroom' where food from the bar will be available. We will be able to bring homebrew samples to this meeting. We'll try to get some advertisements out to attract new homebrewers from the Hillsboro area.

April 1st – Meeting at Verbsky's near Hillsboro. This will be the spring quarterly planning meeting where we finalize DUFF plans for May, June, and July and make tentative plans for August, September, and October. We'll also be holding our Maibock judging for the Winter 2011 club champion. We will take orders for summer beer kits and talk about our hops garden plans for 2011. The plans for the Big Brew should be finalized by this April meeting.

May 7th (Saturday) is the Big Brew day at Mel and Sandy's. We have not decided on a beer style for the 2011 big brew. Also at this event we should be able to distribute summer beer kits & share hops rhizomes.

June – Homebrew Competition/M.S. fundraiser at the Barn? We haven't received information yet, but we believe this event will be happening again in 2011, so brew accordingly. It was fun event last year and we're all looking forward to doing it again. If you missed the fundraiser in 2010, there are lots of photos on DUFF Facebook http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=111168845596732&v=photos

Anyone planning to participate should have a five-gallon keg of beer or 2 cases of bottled beer to enter into the competition if it goes as last year.

July 1st – Summer quarterly planning meeting for August, September, & October, and tentative planning for fall quarter, November, December, & January. Summer berry-wine-making should be in full swing with news from the vineyards. We didn't decide on a location for the July meeting, any suggestions?

Everyone have a great weekend and stay warm! Have a homebrew!

Mel
